Dr. Zaydan brings to America the first-hand perspective of a woman on the conflict in Iraq. A native of Iraq born in 1959, Dr. Zaydan is the mother of four children. Through 2005 she owned a pharmacy in Baghdad which she sold in order to devote her energy entirely to the Knowledge for Iraqi Women Society, which she helped to found in 2003.

Global Exchange and Code Pink coordinated and made possible the US speaking tour of Dr. Zaydan and four other Iraqi women. Coordinating the Columbia, Missouri events was the Columbia Peace Coalition. Financial support came from the Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation, Mid-Missouri peaceworks, the Columbia Chapter of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and local concerned citizens.

Amnesty International chapters of Rock Bridge and Hickman high schools brought Dr. Zaydan to Rock Bridge, and the Muslim Student Organization brought her to the University.

The Knowledge for Iraqi Women Society is a non-profit non-governmental organization which does not participate in politics. Objectives of the Society fall into the areas of education, family, and cross-cultural communication with the spirit of love, unity and cooperation. Projects include a medical clinic, kindergarten, library and computer lab. Also, loans have been made to deserving families and a sponsorship program for orphans is part of the Society’s work to establish a safe and sound generation in educational, psychological, and health respects.
