[Philosophy of Science AND Philosophy of Mind]

           Observed         DUALITY      Observer

To be covered:

If memory serves, a course I passed AND a course I failed, respectively.

To me, the basic duality invoked by a scientific mind is that of the observer and the observed. In much of science what is observed is considered external to the mind observing, thus objective. This raises the issue of the boundary between self and other.

When observation is applied to self, however... the issue of self and other is compounded by the self-referential loop leading to infinite regress.  When the self is divided into the observing part and the observed part, it seems that there is an even smaller part, yet with a bigger perspective, seeing the observation of the observed, and another perspective containing both and etc.  Another way of seeing this is addressed by Godel.

Rumi on the observer and the observed:

Look into your own eye, and make no mistake,
So that essence of seer and seen become one.

On whatever side you gaze, you shall see my form,
Whether you gaze upon self, or the mass that is visible.

Shun distorted vision and heal your sight, for the evil eye
Will be distant from my beauty in that moment.   {Context}

Observation in physics reveals a Gravity centered Macrocosm superposed upon the Quantum world of Light. The Grand Unified Theory has not come to physics.
