Schizophrenia and Religion

"my Hindu guru guy," Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

why my? how I met Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

He was sharing in Kansas City, Missouri, about an two hours away from my town, Columbia. Two of my friends went with me to see him. We arrived late, because we'd gotten lost in the city. There were three seats together, and we sat down as he was giving a guided meditation, eyes closed. At this point in time I was pretty psychotic, and it seemed as if every movement I made was translated into a cough or a rustle in the room, and I was causing a disturbance. I tried to hold still, as he ended the meditation and began to speak, sitting on a plush chair with white. Silently, my heart cried out, "I came all the way from Columbia and I can't see you." Somebody's head must have been blocking my view!

Out loud he said something like, " Well, I should stand up, then." I was confused between I and I and I stood up in the audience, as he stood up from his chair. "No, I should stand up," he said. I sat down amidst gentle laughter all around. He remained standing throughout the rest of his talk. I was suddenly relaxed, and enjoyed it. Afterwards I stood in line and greeted him.

Clearly this was a psychotic experience, and a lot of it is in my head. But it was a powerful connection in my heart, when the timing of our identical actions entangled us for a moment. Now I own 28 hours of his talks, and he is "my Hindu guru guy."

Our quotes:

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (2:14 min, Real Audio, 280Kb)

"An enlightened person, when he speaks, he doesn't speak from the position 'oh, you're all ignorant I'm very enlightened i'm going to tell you something.' No. He knows the Divine has provided this beautiful knowledge and it is taking back, coming in another form."

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (1:09 min, Real Audio, 840Kb)

"But there is another type of listening. This is listening from the heart, as though your whole body has become and ear. Sense of hearing. You are soaking, you are hearing from the entirety, the totality.  That is called sharing..."
